The Albertina Walker Scholarship is for non-for-profit
organization that was designed to help college and music
students further their education by offering financial
assistance in the form of scholarships. This Scholarship
Foundation was organized in 1988, under the leadership of the
"Queen of Gospel Music" Ms. Albertina Walker. Since its
inception the Foundation has been helping young people
continue their education by distributing over $50,000 to
students throughout the country. The money raised for
the Scholarship Foundation helps to offset financial burdens
that college and music students face by giving them the
access to funding for things such as textbooks and supplies,
course materials and class registration. Support for the
Scholarship Foundation is sought through corporate
sponsorships and private donations.
Currently the Scholarship is being offered to students who
have completed at least one year of music study.
Students must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, major or minor in
music;, submit a 500 word essay on "Why Gospel Music Is
Important" , two letters of recommendation, and official
school transcripts. Once the foundation receives these
materials, the applicants are reviewed and selected by the
Foundations Scholarship Committee. Awards are given
based upon the relative merits of the entrants and the funds
available.
In addition to assisting college and musci students with
their finacnial needs, the Scholarship Foundation also meets
the needs of the community. Each year the Scholarship
Foundation and it's member organize visits to the various
places throughout the City of Chicago, such as senior citizen
homes, nursing homes, AIDS hospices, homeless shelters, abused
women and children shelters, and the Cook County Correctional
Facilities. The Scholarship Foundation also hosts
various activities such as clothing drives, toy drives, food
drives, and youth nights which include bowling and skating
parties.
The Albertina Walker Scholarship is especially proud of its
annual scholarship gospel concert in which gospel artist and
the community come together to raise finances for the music
scholarships, and scholarship recipients are awarded. Ms.
Walker is a strong advocate of education, and the doors of
opportunity that it opens. Although Ms. Walker never
attended college, due to her pioneering efforts in gospel
music, she firmly believes in education and was presented with
a Doctorate Degree from the University of Chicago, and the
Northwest Indiana Theological School for her outstanding
commitment to people and education. With the vision of
the Founder, the Scholarship Foundation for the Creative and
Performing Arts continues to promote education, community
involvement, and helping people in need. |
